ONALASKA — Less than 10 days after breaking the school scoring record, Matt Thomas was back at it for the Onalaska High School boys basketball team.
Thomas scored 50 points to lead the Hilltoppers to a convincing 84-42 win Monday over MVC opponent Tomah.
After playing just more than 20 minutes, Thomas was pulled from the game. The sharpshooter connected on 21 of his 30 field-gal attempts, including six 3-pointers.
“It was really special the way he was playing tonight,” Onalaska coach Craig Kowal said. “I’ve seen some amazing performances, but this was the best yet.”
Thomas scored 12 points in the first minute, 10 seconds of the game and finished the first quarter with 24 for the Hilltoppers.
Onalaska (10-2, 4-1), ranked second in the state in Division 2, has become accustomed to seeing Thomas scoring in bunches. The senior guard first broke the school record for most points in a game with 43 against Lakeville Christian Academy on Jan. 5, but even Kowal was shocked by his output Monday.
“It was unbelievable,” Kowal said.
