Goals are a key element to managing and improving performance, yet most players don’t know how to set proper goals. Sometimes at camps or clinics I ask players what their goals are. Most of them say things like “play college basketball”, “be all-conference”, “make the varsity team”, and so on. The “goals” of these players lack specific action, measurability, and a time frame. In reality, these aren’t goals at all, they’re dreams or results.
Goals that you set should serve as detailed plans of action to take you closer to achieving your dreams or desired results. Think of it as a ladder: Right now you’re standing on the ground. At the top of the ladder is a dream or result you’d like to achieve. Imagine each rung of the ladder as a specific, detailed goal that will get you closer to your dream. With successful completion of each goal, you get a step closer to your dream. It should be noted that the climb to the top of the ladder will not be easy or smooth. There will be times when, instead of climbing upward, you slip down a rung or two. However, that isn’t the important part, the important part is that you understand this will be part of the process and you are willing to stay the course and keep committed to accomplishing your goals.
