I always use the week between Christmas and New Year’s to reflect on my life. I evaluate myself personally (as a husband & father) and I evaluate myself professionally (as a basketball strength & conditioning coach). When doing so, I make sure to keep this quote in mind:
“Never let your successes go to your head and never let your failures go to your heart.”
I also formalize my plan for the coming year. I write down goals as well as weekly, monthly, and yearly ‘to-do’ lists. I have always been a tad OCD when it comes to ‘to-do’ lists.
When formulating my plan, I keep this quote in mind:
“If you always do what you have always done, you will always be where you have always been.”
My goals are challenging… yet achievable… and I have no fear of failing to reach the loftiest of them. After all:
“If everything you do is working, then you aren’t pushing yourself hard enough!”
The last component, which ties everything together, is an exercise called “Start, Stop, & Continue.” This exercise is more valuable than a half-hearted New Year’s resolution.
NOTE: It has been proven that New Year’s resolutions are as effective as Power Balance bracelets (insert sarcasm).
I recommend you do “Start, Stop, & Continue” by yourself and with your team.
Write down one thing you will START doing in 2011.
Write down one thing you will STOP doing in 2011.
Write down one thing you will CONTINUE doing in 2011.
If you are committed to these three things… you will be amazed at the result.
“You have to expect success, earn success, and deserve success if you want to have success.”
