Why Most Closeout Drills Aren’t Effective and How to Run Ones That Get Results

by

Closeouts are crucial to a solid defensive system yet one of the toughest things to get our players to consistently execute.  And, it’s probably a huge source of frustration for you as a coach.

I know I struggled with them a ton when playing because they truly are one of the hardest things to do in basketball. Which is why so many offenses are designed around creating closeouts.

But, ironically, through an offensive drill, we realized that how we’d been working on it (and you might be too) is completely wrong.

When we do most closeout drills we perform them from straight on like the diagram below

Which is probably a part of the reason it’s such a tough skill for players to carryover to games…

…We rarely closeout in straight lines in a game, but that’s how every closeout drill I’ve seen is setup

So if we have a better way to drill it we can get better results.

The good news is we’ve found a better way.

And, you can learn how by joining us at our Coaches Academy in Jacksonville.
