Top 5 Reasons Players Need Performance Training

by

Below are five reasons why a performance training program is vital for maximizing player development. Every player can improve with a well-planned program to improve their athleticism and give them an advantage over the competition.

1. The body is the foundation for skills

If athletes are weak in certain body positions or move inefficiently, then they are not playing to their potential. Skills are enhanced by a strong, athletic body, making them more effective. Train the body+skills for maximum development.

2. Optimized movement efficiency

Every skill benefits from efficient execution. For example, effective offense out of triple threat is dependent on a good first step. It is important to train movements like the lunge that reflect the body positioning seen in a good first step. Making efficient use of our bodies in scenarios like the first step takes practice and hard work. Training basketball movements in skill work AND in strength training effectively doubles the practice reps. Maximized movement efficiency=maximized athleticism.

3. Strength in basketball-specific positions

Most of our skill curriculum teaches playing with contact on offense. Of course, basketball is a contact sport! Effectively playing with contact requires strength, balance, and body control to execute. All of these attributes are enhanced and improved with a good performance training program.

4. Player safety through injury risk reduction

It’s a simple fact that if you are injured you can’t play. Everyone wants to play, and no one wants to get hurt. Quality performance training focuses on training in all different planes and positions to enhance strength and neuromuscular control in the fast paced, ever changing environment that is basketball. It also teaches proper technique so the body can learn and practice being in safer positions.

5. X-Factor

When I was a player I always reflected on the tough conditioning and lifting session anytime I was in a tough situation. I felt like since I pushed myself and excelled in those physically demanding scenarios, I could do this task at hand. There is a serious advantage and confidence that comes from working physically hard. Players who consistently push their body reap the physical AND the psychological benefits of knowing they have an edge.
