There’s an old saying in basketball that the season will ask what you’ve done all summer. I recently read an article about the University of Virginia Basketball Program and their Head Coach Tony Bennett. In the article Coach Bennett said that every fall when his players return to campus he asks them:
“Would you beat last years version of yourself in 1 on 1 right now?”
It’s important and, in my opinion, often overlooked by players or parents to assess if the player has improved. It’s easy to get caught up in the hectic schedule of practices, games, tournaments, camps, training and we forget to actually evaluate what we’re doing and why.
It is a great exercise to look back and simply review and evaluate what you’re doing and if you are improving or not. If you can honestly answer those questions you will be able to make the best decisions moving forward and have a better chance of achieving your goals and dreams.
