Stuck in the Denver airport last month I picked up a book called The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin. I just had finished another great book titled The Happiness Advantage so I thought I might as well stay with the theme. I won’t go into the details of the book, but I do recommend it for anyone – she wrote it in a very personal way making it an easy read. The book is based on a her “Happiness Project”, in which she focuses on one aspect of her life that she thinks will make her happier for a month straight.
A small part of the book talks about what she calls her “True Rules”, which are short rules specifically tailored to your own individual life – things that you can rely on when making decisions. I went through and put together some of my “True Rules” and encourage you to do the same. If I were coaching this might be something that I did before the start of every season with our team.
- If you’re going to think then think big
- You always choose how you feel
- Be grateful – somewhere right now someone else has it much worse than you do
- When making a tough decision always ask “what is the right thing to do?”. I often ask myself “what would MacArthur do”? (Click here to read on Coach Dave MacArthur).
- Exercise 6 days per week – you always feel better.
- Buy anything that you want at the grocery store. It’s always cheaper than eating out.
- Spend more money on experiences and less on “things”
- Go to as many basketball games as possible even if you need a break from the game. You always meet people.
- Learn to shut your phone off
Feel free to post your own list below!
