Kobe Bryant is a film nerd. He is constantly watching film, trying to improve his game by either correcting his mistakes or stealing a skill or move from someone else. But the key to Kobe being able to pick up these skills and implement them quickly is the process he uses to implement them.
1) Watches the move on film
2) Visualizes himself using the move or skill
3) Walks through the move on the floor without a ball
4) Adds the ball and goes half-speed to be able to feel the move and perform it correctly
5) Increases the intensity to game speed
He values the process of clearly being able to understand a skill. There are 3 levels of being able to perform a move correctly.
1) Recognize the move
2) Perform the move
3) Feel the move
At our camps we go through a similar process.
1) Explain
2) Demonstrate
3) Drill 1 on 0
4) Praise “right” and correct mistakes
5) Drill 1 on 0
6) Compete in a situational 1 on 1 where you have to use the series of moves.
While we use the same process in our skills workouts we go through it quicker. By attending camp and slowing the process down, it’s easier for players to get to the 3rd level — the ability to feel the move. There’s no secrets. It’s not a trick. It’s an efficient process that helps our players get results quickly – no matter what level they are at.
