Watching game film is something every player can do to improve their game. It is a separator — something that can give you an edge. And everyone is looking for an edge. Here are 3 powerful reasons you should be watching game film.
1) Players have to see the big picture. They have to see how the drills we are working on translate to concepts they can use in a game. If you don’t know how something is going to benefit your game you are not going to work as hard on it. You must see the big picture.
2) There is a direct correlation between how easily players learn new skills and how intently they watch the game. Players who have a natural “feel” for the game have spent a lot of time observing the game in person and on tv
3) Your mind can’t tell a difference between physically practicing a skill and vividly visualizing yourself performing the skill. Watching game film is a form of visualization. When we are showing game film, we are also working on having the players visualize themselves performing the same skill in a game. The clearer we see in our minds the easier it will be to perform on the floor.
At each of our camps we watch NBA and NCAA game film, individual video clips of concepts that we are teaching out on the floor. It helps players make the transition from 1 on 0 to 1 on 1, and eventually to 5 on 5 play. It helps them understand quicker and improve faster. I think we can agree that’s something we’d all like to be able to do.
