What do you do? by Mike Lee

by

I get told quite often ” I want to coach basketball or be involved, but I’m not really sure what I want to do?”

  • “Do I want to be a skills trainer?”
  • “Do I want to coach high school?”
  • “Do I want to grind it out and try to make it in college or the NBA?”

If you’re going through this here are 5 things that hopefully will help you get a better understanding of what you actually want to do.

1)  Spend time in thought.  Zero distractions.  My favorite time to do this is running outside – maybe something different for you, but some of my best thoughts come when I have no phone, no email and no distractions.
2)  Pay attention to what really makes you happy.  NOT what is supposed to make you happy as defined by society.
3)  Find others who have done what you want to do and seek advice.  I know that is what you are doing with me, which is great, but  once you really decide what you want to do seek those experts out.
4)  Read.  Reading for me sparks creative thinking and ideas about what I really want to do with my life.
5)  If you are like most people – what you think you want right now is definitely going to change, especially if you are setting lofty goals and dreams.
  • 12 years ago I wanted to be a high school teacher and coach high school basketball
  • 10 years ago I wanted to coach college basketball
  • 8 years ago I wanted to build a successful AAU program and send players to high major DI schools from small towns in WI
  • 5 years ago I decided to focus more on training, take a leap of faith and move to Milwaukee to start a training company and camps
  • 2 years ago I decided I wanted to grow my business so eventually I can have someone else run it and try to get a job in the NBA or coaching college.
  • 1 year ago I wanted to start a non-profit to work with inner city players in Milwaukee.
It may seem like it’s crystal clear, but you have to have the ability and willingness to adapt.
