Are you Coachable? by Galen Harkness

Blog #3 Yes Coach!

No matter how skilled you are or how great your team is at this point or any other point in the season; you as a player need to make sure you are one thing every single day you play this game.  Coachable!!  The more coachable you are; the better YOU will become and the more impact YOU will have on your team.

Players need to do the following to being coachable:

  1. Be Open Minded: listen to what your coach is saying regardless of what your mom, dad, girlfriend, or uncle have told you in the past.  This is now! If you are open-minded, you will gain something that can make you better.
  2.  Accept Coaching: you need to take the teaching as a way of making you better.  Your game is not perfect, and if you think it is than you are sadly mistaken because we can all be coached to improve. Coaching is meant to benefit you! Embrace it!
  3. Willing to Change: after you open your mind and accept the coaching, you must be willing to change your game, practice habits, shot, or footwork in order to improve your game. POSITIVE CHANGE = POSITIVE IMPROVEMENT! This takes time and repetition.  Coach tells you to fix your footwork, but you only practice it once. No, you need to be working on the change daily in order to make it happen. Being coachable means you are going to become a different player.
  4. Engage in the Coaching: your body language is a huge indicator to your coachability.  Eye contact and a head nod are two physical examples of being coachable.  Those items mean you are tuned in to the coach and the lesson they are teaching.  Negative body language means you know-it-all or you are just too down to accept coaching.  Both actions limit your development.
  5. Be a Sponge: absorb as much coaching as possible from your coaches.  Do not limit yourself to one coach or your “favorite” coach.  Keep a notebook of coaching and seek out guidance.  Great players are hungry to be coached!  Great players are motivated to gain an advantage! Watch video, study other great players, study your own game, and let a coach tell you where you can improve and how you can improve. Then, after hours and hours of practice and more coaching, watch as the changes unfold over the course of your playing career.

I guarantee you will grow and develop as a player and a person, if you would increase your coachability by acquiring the above characteristics. I challenge you to take one or two or whatever you can handle and implement them into your game for the remainder of your season.

Coaches love players who are coachable!
