Most people would be shocked at the results if they would actually take the time to train their mind like they train their bodies.
Last night I worked out a player who is now a graduating senior going to play college basketball next fall. When I first met him in 8th grade one of the first things I remember ever hearing him say was “I can’t shoot – I can’t get it there”. Clearly he was strong enough, even in 8th grade to get the ball to the rim. I believe with proper technique in 6th grade most kids can probably get the ball to the rim from the three point line. What was interesting in his case was his form was actually almost picture perfect in 8th grade – when he didn’t think that he could get the ball to the rim. Another thing is that this kid is probably one of the hardest working players I have ever worked with. He goes right up there with Steve Novak and Jerry Smith. The problem wasn’t his work ethic or his technique. It was in his mind. He was so afraid to fail and make mistakes that he didn’t trust his form and the time he put in.
So last night we worked out for the first time in about 18 months. We ended the workout with Celtic “50” – 10 made threes at the 5 spots and you pick a number to try to be under for total shots. He picked 85, which is about 59%. What was the result? 50/78 threes at game speed – he was getting his shot off quick!
So what changed in the last 4 years? His training? His form? His work ethic?
None of the above. He changed his mind. Change your mind and change your life. Become aware of your thoughts and you will open the door to the most powerful resource in the world. A positive mind.
