No one runs a generic offensive so why should you expect generic drills to produce results?
I’ve been there…
…And it’s NOT fun at all
I was coaching a team that was really struggling getting trapped at half-court, and while some passing drills helped, it wasn’t until I developed a specific drill to address the challenge we were having. It was incredible the amount of confidence they now had because they had already been there before in practice – hundreds of times.
Similar to passing, working on shooting as a team is great, but it’s not the best way to create carryover to the game. And, that’s what we all want — game carryover!
We’ve found that a lot of coaches run breakdown drills that are 1 on 1 or 2 on 2, which is GREAT, but we think they’re missing a step…
…Breaking it down even further by taking away the defense
So when we run 1 on 0, 2 on 0 and 3 on 0 breakdown drills — that are specific to our offense— it helps players visualize game situation. And then when they have live defense, or get into this situation in a game, they’ve already been there—hundreds of times.
When we work with high level middle school or high school players during the season the first thing we ask them is “What do you run on offense?”. We then take this offense — whether it’s the flex, dribble drive, motion, 5 Out, Ball Screen Motion — and customize the workouts so every shot, every repetition is a situation their in during a game.
And, from what they’ve told us, it helps tremendously. There’s game carryover and they get results.
Want a recap? Here are 4 Reasons to Run Breakdown Drills
- It helps your players visualize the situation
- They see success in their minds first – positive visualization builds confidence
- Focus on specific details — when you go live right away there’s a lack of focus
- High reps in common actions and situations
